Jim Whelan

Location: Eastbourne, East Sussex
About me...

I have been an actor for 50 years and have worked with many of the top stars of Television and Film. Over the years, I have appeared in some of the biggest storylines in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, The Royle Family and recently Home Fires.
The highlight of this year has been working with American superstar Rob Lowe in Wild Bill for ITV, closely followed by being accepted by Cunard and P&O as a Cruise Ship Speaker.
Having worked in clubs and theatres as a stand-up comic, my talks are put over with humour and panache.

About my talks...

I am usually a stand-alone presenter – I just stand up and talk so I have no need of any props other than a mic if it is a large venue. However, my talk Clips From the Cutting Room Floor is a  powerpoint presentation and for your information I have noted it as such in the write up below.

My fee is £100 with 30p per mile travelling expenses when the venue is more than 10 miles from my home in Eastbourne. As far as travelling is concerned, I will go anywhere where I can reasonably get home the same day, so, about 100 miles. If the venue is any further afield, I would need accommodation to be provided.

Jim Whelan - Fifty Years in TV Soaps

Born into poverty during the second world war in the back streets of Salford, Jim’s talk takes us from 1942 to the present day. Charting the highs and lows of a life and career that has seen him work with such luminaries as Rod Steiger, Anthony Perkins, David Tennant, David Morrissey, Ray Winstone and more recently Samantha Bond, Francesca Annis and Ed Stoppard. He has appeared in Coronation Street in every Decade that it has existed and after more than fifty episodes, playing seven characters, is friendly with many of the regulars. The talk is given in a humorous and entertaining manner; having been a Stand up comic for many years, Jim can bring out the anecdotes and will happily do a question and answer session.

Stories of the Stars

Actors of the calibre of Rod Steiger, Anthony Perkins, David Tennant, David Morrisey, Francesca Annis, Rob Lowe and Samantha Bond are some of the names I have worked with. Affectionate (and sometimes not so nice) stories from the world of TV and Film

Anecdotes From Film and Television

Fifty years is a long time to follow your dream and no one can take away the tremendous highs which come from working with stars like Ray Winstone, Jeremy Brett, Rob Lowe and Christian Bale. Stories from these and others form the basis of this talk.

Clips From the Cutting Room Floor

This is a PowerPoint presentation

This is, at the moment, my only talk using PowewrPoint and it includes clips from Film and Television, lots of which have been rescued from the cutting room floor. Scenes which have never been seen on British screens, but which give a fascinating look at the life of a character actor.

Christmas With the Soap Stars

Straight after this picture was taken, Jim went off to do Panto. Over the years he has performed in more than thirty such shows. His first was in 1970 when he played Billy Crusoe at Oldham Repertory Theatre, the Dame that year was Roy Barrowclough and they remained friends until Ray’s death.

What happens to Soap Stars when they leave their regular shows? Their first call is often Pantomime and Jim has a fund of stories and anecdotes from these encounters. This amusing and informative talk is particularly suited to the Christmas period.

“My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful cruise on P&O’s Iona, where we had the pleasure to meet Jim Whelan (for the first time) who was appearing in the Headliners Theatre and it has changed our minds for good about attending speakers shows for entertainment on board!
This show was thoroughly enjoyable. Entertaining, happy, sad, unbelievable in parts but so, so interesting! Jim himself was a sheer joy to listen to, accompanied by pictures, videos & film clips of years gone by. A true account of his struggles during childhood, his journey to adulthood and the captivating stories about his rise into Show Business and his own family life. A small boy done good!
There were two shows, each show was different but with the same subject matter. A kind of rags to riches story (and I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that!) but riches in a way of personal achievement for him alone, that he believed would never be reachable.
It will leave you feeling like you’ve known Jim for a long time, a family member almost! You may get a lump in your throat along the way, might even shed a tear or two at times but you’ll want to punch the air with happiness for him at the end of this fascinating true life story! One of the kindest, modest, nicest person you will ever meet and for a man approaching his 80th year? Not bad at all!”

Nick & Jude – April 2022

At EdenARA Edenbridge Jim gave an informative and humorous story about his past life. The whole club thoroughly enjoyed it.
