About me...

Having bought my first guitar many, many years ago and worked as a stagehand at Crewe Lyceum Theatre after school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do as a career. I wanted to entertain people with my voice and guitar. The careers people at my school didn’t seem to be on the same wavelength, but eventually I became a professional musician and singer at the ripe old age of nineteen.
Hard work and perseverance paid off and I eventually recorded at Abbey Road, did Radio Luxemburg, Granada TV and travelled the length and breadth of Europe. Later on in life I became a teacher of English, music and drama which gave me another string to my bow! During this time I wrote and presented my Childrens’ Songs for BBC Educational Radio.

About my Talk...

I am completely self sufficient – no props needed, just me, my guitar, my banjo and my stool.
Sometimes, when necessary, I will use my own small amplifier. Although my presentation ‘Band on the Road’ is predominantly a talk (scroll down for more details) I accept all requests for 1950’s and 1960’s songs from my audience and I can usually manage the singer if not the specific song. My talk can last up to 75 minutes but about one hour is normal – though I can fit in with whatever you require.   Short notice work a speciality.

I can provide a virtual presentation (zoom)

Fee:

My fee ranges from £60 to £100 depending on timings and distance from my home in Ashover Derbyshire. Besides venues in Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire I am prepared to travel anywhere in England provided appropriate travelling costs are met and when necessary, overnight accommodation is paid for.

ZOOM with Phil - Pop Music History

Allow yourself forty five minutes of glorious looking back to the times when music was a way of life.  I will take you back even to the dance hall craze of America in the 1930s. Then we will move forward to the “Crooners” of songs by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter.  Eventually all roads lead to the late fifties and the explosion of Pop and Rock’n’Roll onto our streets and into our halls, pubs and youth clubs. Singing unforgettable songs performed with my trusty guitar, I will rekindle memories you perhaps thought you had forgotten. Frank Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, Marty Wilde, Bobby Darin and many others find their way into my Zoom world.  I will tell stories of my recording at Abbey Road,( search Phil Ryan and the Crescents – You tube), gigging with The Beatles, listening in awe to Ben E King and sharing the next dressing room peg to Bill Haley!

A couple of quizzes and reading excerpts from my book, “Band on the Road” (Check Amazon Books) all make for a wonderful walk down memory lane.  Questions are no problem and will be answered as fully as possible with help from your Zoom meeting host.

If it is a December booking, then I can present the entertainment  with Christmas themed songs and carols. I will also email a songsheet flyer for members to join in and “singalongachristmas”!

Expenses are far lower for Zoom than personal appearance so your funds will not be stretched!

Band on the Road

The title of the talk ‘Band on the Road’ is the title of my book (On Amazon and Kindle). This tells of my life as a pop singer/guitarist in the 60’s and has interesting and amusing anecdotes from this time. I also include a brief history of dance music from the 20s onwards. I’ve gigged with The Beatles, used the next dressing room peg to Bill Haley and shared the bill with Ben E King. I use the guitar during my talk and get my audience to become my “backing group” on some vintage 60’s hits. Bobby Vee, Marty Wilde, Elvis, Lonnie Donegan; they’re all in there and there’s a couple of short quizzes included when time permits.

Band on the Road With Jingles

This talk is a Christmas version of my talk Band on the Road and it includes seasonal songs and carols and a Christmas Quiz. It tells of my life as a pop singer/guitarist in the 60’s and has interesting and amusing anecdotes from this time. I also include a brief history of dance music from the 20s onwards. I’ve gigged with The Beatles, used the next dressing room peg to Bill Haley and shared the bill with Ben E King. I use the guitar during my talk and get my audience to become my “backing group” on some vintage 60’s hits – Christmas ones, of course…..
