About Tony Davis...

Tony Davis is a 78 year old grandfather who is very curious. He follows with great interest  developments in Science and Mathematics. He mostly uses this new information to  stimulate sixth formers who are looking to enter elite Universities.    A by-product is that he also gives talks to adult groups. Below is a list of those talks he has  prepared at the moment but he is always interested to consider the challenges of addressing  a topic of your choice.    The presentations are heavily illustrated and often the audience finds quite serious ideas  amusing. It is the way he tells them.

Doctor At Sea

An amusing exploration of my adventures in the mid 60’s as Ship’s Surgeon on the MV  Braemar Castle for its last two journeys. Our passengers were predominantly  Commonwealth Office staff going to or returning from their African postings.

Can We Feed Ourselves?

Since Malthus we have been threatened with future where the world will face starvation. It  hasn’t happened yet but rapidly increasing populations and drought from global warming  still pose a threat. What solutions are emerging?

How Did the Kings Find Bethlehem?

The Kings arrived in Bethlehem by following a star? Actually, how would you do that? In this  talk we, who are used to the magic of SatNav, will investigate how navigation has evolved  over the centuries and consider possible solutions to the Kings’ problem.

How Do Brains Work?

Just a simple topic to cover in an hour!! This talk discusses how some of the recent  discoveries have helped neuroscientists understand how the brain functions. This has no  alarming sections but does discuss how experiments and observation are used to build a  better understanding of our brains.

What You Don’t Know About Mother’s Milk

We all know it is good for you but some recent discoveries explain how it supports the  immune system, brain development and gut function. Maybe breastfeeding will be  accepted once again for the valuable benefits it provides.

Who Governs Britain?

Clearly our MP’s in Parliament are in charge. In this talk, the other players in the process of  governing us are identified to paint a picture which is much less clear and, probably, more  worrying than anyone would like.

Will We Live Forever

Over your lifetime, life expectancy has increased considerably and shows little sign of  stopping. Scientists are beginning to understand the processes involved in ageing and  believe that at least some of them can be reversed. Could we live forever? The first person to  live to 200 will probably be born in your lifetime.

Why Diets Don’t Work

We know that being slim and active helps us live better, longer lives. But dieting doesn’t  work, does it? Recent research in bacterial genetics has shed light on why diets are not  effective although it is clear that your diet does govern why you weigh what you do.

Can We Treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

A distressing condition increasingly recognised and increasingly common. A variety of  treatments have been used with mixed success. Some new treatments are somewhat  amazing in the way they work and their evidence base. Even more amazing are some  discoveries from a smelly Florida pond which suggests that the condition can be prevented  by an injection.

How Did Culture Evolve?

Neanderthal man existed only 40,000 years ago. Man evolved slowly to about 5,000 years  ago when Stonehenge was built. And recently all kinds of evolution has happened. But how  did we get to literature, music, astronomy and our other cultural achievements? Culture has  evolved along with our bipedal gait. This is a talk about how that happened.

Do Fathers Matter?

Childcare books in your local bookstore are all focussed on Mothers. Shouldn’t there be  books for fathers? This talk considers the value of fathers to the creation, development and  maturation of our children. They are undervalued - but a Grandad would say that wouldn’t  he?

Are Renewables Enough?

The use of fossil fuels with their greenhouse gas outputs is strongly discouraged. Renewable  energy is the answer. So we are told. This talk is based on the work of David McKay was a  physicist who worked the numbers. The results are surprising and require our action.
