About The Speaker...

Hello there! Thanks for looking at my profile.

I’m an experienced speaker, in that I’ve been giving lectures (and holding workshops or sitting on panels) all around the world for around 20 years. I speak in person or online.

I have a PhD in a subfield of literature known as translation studies (where you analyse how books get translated) and I was an academic in literature for many years. I am also an author and a translator. I’ve published nine books, and have two additional ones due out in the next year, and I’ve also translated or edited dozens more. I have published hundreds of articles, including personal essays, book or restaurant reviews, recipes, interviews and so forth.

Most of my talks are related to literature, translation, parenting or breastfeeding. My specific fields of expertise vary and they include: literary translation, Scandinavian literature, children’s literature, comics and graphic novels, Jewish literature, LGBTQ+ literature, detective fiction, LGBTQ+ parenting, breastfeeding, allergies, Jewish history and culture, Scandinavian history and culture, and more. I would describe myself as passionate about my fields and I love to try to get other people engaged in them.

The Art and Craft of Literary Translation
The Depiction of the Female Body in Literature

The Art and Craft of Literary Translation

In this session, you can hear about what it means to be a literary translator. I’ll give examples of my translation work from Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Faroese, and explore the art and craft behind bringing those words to life in English. If desired, we can also try out a translation activity together, with no foreign language skills required. I have been translating for over 20 years, with dozens of works published, and I have also written books about translation, such as Translation Theory for Literary Translators.

The Depiction of the Female Body in Literature

This talk will analyse the way the female body is portrayed in literature and how that reflects on our society. I will give examples from English-language books for both adults and children in order to understand how we appear to view women and their bodies in contemporary times. If desired, I can also give examples from other languages or time periods, and can also bring in depictions of the female body in other art forms. I published a book on this topic, The Portrayal of Breastfeeding in Literature, which was the first in-depth study to explore how breastfeeding is portrayed in words and images and what that tells us about our view of women.

Challenging Antisemitism in Society

We are currently seeing a huge increase to antisemitism in the world today, and this must be rectified. In this talk, I analyse some of the reasons behind this and then offer ideas for what can be done about it. I carried out a research study into the experiences of Jews in the workplace and also am the author of a forthcoming book about supporting Jewish individuals and families antenatally, during labour and birth, and in the postpartum period.

Becoming an LGBTQ+ Parent

Many LGBTQ+ people who would like to become parents would like honest, accurate information about all the possible ways they can go about this and what the pros and cons of each choice are. Meanwhile, non-LGBTQ+ people are often curious to know more about non-traditional families. In this talk, I will draw on both my own experience as an LGBTQ+ parent as well as on a book I published, We’re Here!: A Practical Guide to Becoming an LGBTQ+ Parent, in order to elucidate the paths LGBTQ+ people take to parenthood and the benefits this has to individuals and to society.

Allergy Families: Definitions, Case Studies, Tips

More people today are living with allergies, and this can have a massively detrimental impact on both those individuals and their families. This talk defines allergies and their causes, explores how they can be handled at different stages of someone’s life, gives cases studies from allergy families, and also offers tips for medical professionals and others who are supporting allergy families. I am myself an allergy parent and the author of Feeding Your Allergy Baby.
