The Famous Plaques of the East End

A new illustrated talk, representing people and places of the East End in the 20th Century.
Featuring Jimi Hendrix, who wrote Purple Haze at The Upper Cut Club in Forrest Gate in 1966. Sir George Edwards, the designer of Concord, born in Highams Park in 1908. Beryl Swain, the first woman to ride a motorcycle in the Isle of Man TT Race of 1962.
Learn about infamous and tragic incidents. On the 13th of June 1944, the first V1 Rocket hit the train tracks at Grove Road, Mile End, killing 6 people and injuring many more. In the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster of 1943, one hundred and seventy-three people lost their lives in the worst civilian disaster of World War 2 and the truth was covered up for 34 years.

The East End of London contains many hidden treasures. Did you know that Jack Leslie was selected to play football for England in 1925 but deselected when the FA discovered that he was black? Or that on Saturday 16th August 2008, the last race happened at Walthamstow Dog Stadium, but 16 years on the stadium sign still flashes red neon every evening? Or that there’s a statue of Prim Minister William Gladstone in Bow Road with a mysterious red paint on his hands that for the past 150 years cannot be removed. In March 1939, Alfred Hitchcock left England for the lure of Hollywood. Over the next 36 years, he would direct 36 movies, Find about the documentary he made with Sidney Bernstein during World War II, Also, the Oscar nominations he received, The leading ladies he worked with, The Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series which spanned 10 years and starred many unknown up and coming actors. Also, the unmade final movie due to star Sean Connery. The day he finally became Sir Alfred Hitchcock, knighted by Queen Elizabeth in January 1980.
