About The Speaker...

I am an experienced journalist, author and public speaker with an international career. My copy has appeared in numerous publications including The Guardian, The Independent and The Sydney Morning Herald. I taught Presentation Skills at Lincoln University (no pressure!) and spoke about my Amazon number 1 book, The Process of Poetry, on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row. Moving on from journalism, my later work includes non-fiction books, community plays, heritage trails and Feisty Females, a book of short stories based on a medieval manuscript. My family were £10 POMs, twice, and I have also lived in El Salvador.
I am a member of The Society of Authors and The Society of Women Writers and Journalists.
I am happy to fit in last minute requests, wherever possible.

About Their Talks...

A key factor for me is audience engagement. Therefore, as long as you are happy, my talks are generally interactive. I do, naturally, use a Powerpoint to accompany any talks that I give. I am always happy to chat about my work. This is a great way to learn more about me and whether I would be a good fit for your organisation.

Hacked Off: A Life Asking Questions

Have you ever wondered how to break into journalism? Which areas are the easiest in which to succeed? How do you begin? This talk explores my life as a freelance journalist- which began almost 30 years ago- for newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Weekend Australian and The Guardian. It covers a myriad of facts, including my beginnings, mistakes and lessons learnt. The final third discusses how I have utilised my journalistic skills in other writing commissions including: memoirs, community plays and non-fiction books. This can be adjusted, depending on your preferences.

Feisty Females: Writing Lincolnshire's Women

How did medieval nuns blow their noses? What happened to medieval lepers and why would a Welsh princess be locked up in a remote Lincolnshire priory for 52 years? If you’d like to learn more, this is the talk for you! Historical fiction is the hybrid child of two warring parents: fact and fiction. What are the challenges of writing historical fiction and where do you begin? Is it ever acceptable to tweak the truth? As a member of The Society of Authors writer and a journalist, I talk through possible research pathways and discuss how to find the story from the resulting material. Feisty Females, is a book of short stories featuring some of Lincolnshire’s most iconic women including Nicholaa de la Haye, Alice de Lacy and Hawise de Quincy. This talk usually includes a reading of one of the stories from Feisty Females. There will, of course, be an opportunity to ask questions.

£10 POMS: Highlights and lowlights from the Land Down Under.

This talk explores my experiences of living in Australia at various times in my life: firstly, as a child under the £10 Pom Scheme, later for a year’s working holiday, and finally when I emigrated in the 1990s. It veers from the 60s to the 2000s, from Tasmania to Sydney with stop offs in the GABA, Queensland and Coober Pedy. How did I get there and why did I end up spending a night on the floor of Moscow airport? What did I love and what did I hate? What did I miss and what finally brought me home? Colourful anecdotes; black and white pictures. (Some colour too!)

The Process of Poetry: How does a poem come into being?

This talk focuses on my Amazon number 1 best seller, now on university reading lists across the UK, exploring the process of poetry.
How does an early draft become a final, award-winning poem? I spoke to some of the UK and Australia’s poets to find out. Poets involved include Don Paterson, Gillian Clarke, the former National Poet for Wales, Liz Lochhead, the Scottish Poet Laureate, and many others. I then wrote an Australian sequel and discovered some fascinating differences, both in form and subject matter. This talk is based on my conversations with leading poets who shared their inspirations, the ways in which a poem changed from an early to a final draft and their illuminating working methods. Discussion includes how to put together a poetry collection, approach competitions and prepare a spoken word piece.
This talk is also available as a workshop. I have given this for numerous groups including The Poetry School.
