Welcome to the world of Tee Bylo – professional dead botherer for hire, graveyard wanderer, storyteller, sometime artist, and the founder of The Dead Sleuth.

The Dead Sleuth is a registered company located in the City of York offering professional genealogical services for those who need an experienced and dedicated history sleuth by their side as they embark on a fascinating journey to uncover the lives of their ancestors.

From genealogical advice, family history research, probate transcription, archive retrieval, to photography, walking tours and ancestral storytelling – The Dead Sleuth offers a rich menu of research services.

As an experienced speaker – Tee loves to chat with eager ears and curious minds about her research exploits which includes the tales of those who flirted with criminality during the Victorian era, her passion for tombstone tourism and Georgian history; the search for those elusive ancestors and her career as a sleuthing solopreneur.

And, as the founder of The Polite Tourist – Tee has also been waking the dead who flirted with criminality throughout the Victorian era with the creation of innovative, and meticulously researched walks through the City of York, Scarborough and beyond.

And, when Tee is not taking to the unquiet streets of York, Scarborough and beyond as her alter ego The Lady Brigante with her raven-headed crane, or buried within an archive somewhere or pottering among the tombstones with camera in hand – she will be getting messy with paint and clue inside her cluttered den as The Crooked Hen.

The Irish play write George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) famously quipped that “If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance” and although Tee cannot promise you a foxtrot – she will make it entertaining to watch!

P.S. And, for those tales from the archives, ancestor gossip, whispers from an unquiet graveyard and Tee’s diary of upcoming talks and walks – why not sign up for THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT at deadsleuth.com and bring forth every snippet of chatter direct to your inbox?

From Sleuth to Solopreneur

As a child Tee loved to shock others with the tale that she had been abandoned at birth by gypsies and raised with kindly mice in the crypt of an old church.

Alas! She was born and raised in the ancient and ghostly City of York – a Yorky who lives by the ethos that all is well with the world is there is a book, a decent cup of tea and a bar of chocolate to hand.

A dreamer from birth with a taste for history, a curious mind and the irresistible urge to create and write – Tee was bitten by the genealogy bug as a teenager, and has been researching the riddles and the riveting history of the gnarled branches and fallen leaves of her family tree ever since.

From SLEUTH TO SOLOPRENEUR is the cautionary tale of a company founder and tombstone tourist wandering unquiet graveyards, the research exploits uncovered as she haunts the archives, and the errors and trials of sleuthing family history.

And, with more tales of those long forgotten folk yet to be unearthed – just what kind of mischief could possibly be unleashed by one lowly professional genealogist and grave hunter with a passion for storytelling and an unseemly fascination for Victorian true crime?

Making An Exit A La Victoriana

‘I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it’ ~ Mark Twain

The gothic, romantic gloom resplendent of Victoriana epitomised by the vast, stylish cemeteries with their magnificent mausoleums, and extravagant memorials and the unmistakable trappings of death with the black horses decorated with plumes of black ostrich feathers, mourning cards, and death portraiture.

From fashionable mourning clothes, death masks, locks of hair from the dead arranged and worn in rings and lockets and symbolic death imagery to epidemics such as typhus, cholera and diphtheria, along with poverty, disease and high rates of infant mortality – the Victorian era was tinged throughout with death.

Tee’s presentation of MAKING AN EXIT AL A VICTORIANA is a history of the Victorian Celebration of Death and the weird and wonderful ways in which the Victorians commemorated the dead as the means by which to blunt the sharpness of their grief.

Discover the stories of the Victorian funeral in Yorkshire and the tales of those who made an exit from this earthly realm in style and scandal and ALL lost to history – until now!

Where There's a Will - Is There a Way?

‘It may seem strange that all men sailors should be tinkering at their last wills and testaments, but there are no people in the world more fond of that diversion.’ ~ Herman Melville

Tee’s presentation of WHERE THERE’S A WILL – IS THERE A WAY? shares the history of probate research and how uncovering the wills and testaments of our ancestors can be an exciting foray into our family history.

A Last Will and Testament or the lack of can reveal much about the lives of our ancestors including their social status, and family dynamics – particularly if one was excluded from benefitting under the terms of the final wishes of the deceased; or a small fortune is left to someone who supposedly had no relationship with the dearly departed.

Discover the stories of how Tee’s probate research on the long forgotten folk of Yorkshire during the Victorian era unearthed new discoveries, legal proceedings, an unexpected twist in a family relationship and revenge from beyond the grave.

And ALL lost to history – until now!

Stone Me! The Secret Language of Graveyards

Do you know what a TAPHOPHILE is?

Or what is means to be suffering from COIMETROPHILIA?

Who Lies Beneath?

Should Tee not be in search of a missing ancestor or poring over the details on a newly discovered death certificate or trawling through the parish records in search of a burial entry – she will be wandering among the tombstones somewhere with notebook and camera in hand.

Under the moniker as The Graveyard Squirrel – Tee shares the tales and triumphs of her wanderings among the dead across the web and she can often be found grappling with camera, and battered grave map as she continues with her study of a beautiful churchyard in Acomb York.

The Parish of St Stephen is one of her favourite burying places not only because it is the place where her lovely grandparents now rest but also for the diverse array of tombstones and monuments erected in tribute to those for whom this fascinating place remains their everlasting home.

From coach builders, farmers, surgeons, soldiers, mathematicians, babes in arms, to genteel ladies, gentlemen and glaziers with their lives rich in detail and set in stone – many of their stories await the telling.

Dead Down Under

Should Tee not be in search of a missing ancestor or poring over the details on a newly discovered death certificate or trawling through the parish records in search of a burial entry – she will be wandering among the tombstones somewhere with notebook and camera in hand.

Under the moniker as The Graveyard Squirrel – Tee shares the tales and triumphs of her wanderings among the dead across the web and she can often be found grappling with camera, and battered grave map as she continues with her study of a beautiful churchyard in Acomb York.
